LAND OF THE FREAK, HOME OF THE BRAVE, 2019
3-channel HD video, color, silent. 34 min. 11 sec.
Developed during a residency at the Institute for Electronic Arts in Alfred, NY, Land of the Freak, Home of the Brave is a three-channel immersive video installation created with a Fairlight CVI, a pioneering 1985 video processor once widely used in music videos and commercial television. By reactivating this now-obsolete technology, Marco Scozzaro explores the aesthetics of early digital imaging, its cultural stereotypes, and its enduring impact on contemporary visual culture.
The work unfolds as a hypnotic stream of saturated colors and fragmented forms, constructing an uncanny landscape where nostalgia and the artificial language of image-making converge. Within this space, an alter ego of the artist drifts through a nonlinear, oneiric passage, navigating the liminal terrain of the subconscious.
